Design Choices- Dining Room

The dining room in our home is a part of an open concept plan, so a lot of the choices for this space were a part of choosing the rest of the main level. However, here are the why's for a few of the choices that were specific to this space.

Art - I went with one large piece of art for this room for a couple reasons. The first is in the living room right beside I have multiple photos on one wall and I try to not have repeats (i.e. a gallery wall, any stacked or side by side art or photos, or one large piece). The other reason is the scale of it fills out this wall better, and the large piece creates a focal point, and helps to ground the room with no rug. I hung it a little higher than the normal "rule" but I wanted it to sit above the table.

Curtains- Originally this room had old brown blinds, we pulled them down and replaced them with neutral drapes. I created the illusion of taller ceilings and a larger window by hanging the curtains only an inch below the ceiling, and extending past the edge by about a foot. The extra panels give a great elevated look.

Oversized light fixture- I ordered the first light fixture to be slightly smaller than our dining table. I measured it out and as soon as it got delivered and I held it up I knew it was too small. I sent it back and ordered one almost twice the size. I absolutely love the statement it makes. It fills out the room, the scale is great and creates a distinguishing moment of its own in an open concept room.
